About the project

The story of Fernside SCRIP

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. A community that decided to stop waiting, and start building.

Our story

A semi-rural village with a big ambition

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Fernside sits within the historic Sharlston Common area — a semi-rural community on the eastern edge of Wakefield serving 40–50 households.

Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Our road has suffered years of under-maintenance as an unadopted carriageway. The SCRIP name references both the historic Common and the idea of a "script" — a shared plan everyone signs up to.

Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum. We have long-term residents, young families, and elders who remember when the road was last properly maintained — all around one table, building one vision.

Vision & objectives

Where we're going

"To transform Fernside into a safe, beautiful, climate-resilient green corridor that enhances biodiversity, strengthens community bonds, and sets a replicable standard for sustainable unadopted road improvement across Wakefield and beyond."

Objective 1

Safety & Accessibility

A smooth, level, DDA-compliant surface with dedicated pedestrian priority zones by end of Phase 2 (2027).

Objective 2

Drainage & Climate Resilience

SuDS features that reduce surface water runoff by at least 70% versus existing impermeable surfaces.

Objective 3

Biodiversity

Create 300m+ of new native wildlife habitat delivering +15% Biodiversity Net Gain on the DEFRA metric.

Objective 4

Carbon & Sustainability

≥40% recycled content in surfacing and <50 kgCO₂e per tonne — well below conventional asphalt.

Objective 5

Community & Social Value

Engage ≥80% of households and deliver at least 4 community events or workshops every year.

Objective 6

Long-term Stewardship

A formal maintenance plan with resident contributions — and exploring Council adoption within 5 years.
